Losing weight.. Such a sensitive and overtalked topic. Everyone has something to say, right? There’s always a new diet someone is suggesting to you. There’s always someone pointing out how much weight you’ve gained. Well, let me break it to you! Losing weight is not easy and everyone has a different body. What works for you might not work for me and vice versa.
The issue with weight loss becomes even more complicated when it comes to black men. Reality is that black men have a harder time losing weight than any other ethnicity. According to research, as they age, black men are the most predisposed group to be overweight. The reasons are not only related to their genetics but to financial matters and health education or lack thereof.
Let’s start with genetics first. Obesity, in general, is highly linked to the African-American community more so than any other population in the United States. It makes way to chronic diseases or illnesses such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure that might lead to cardiovascular diseases, etc. This only makes it more difficult to lose weight in a healthy way.
In 2018, the African American population was deemed to be 30% more likely to have serious issues with cardiovascular diseases than any other ethnicity and this is quite concerning, to be honest. What’s even more concerning is that the main reason that causes black men especially to suffer more from obesity-related diseases is not genetics. It’s mainly because of the lack of access to health facilities, and the lack of information regarding black man health in general.
